Abstract

This article examines the represenntation of insecurity in African francophone novels with particular focus on Johhny chien méchant by Emmanuel Dongala, Coeur du Sahel by Djaili Amadou Amal and Moussa Konaté’s Meurtre à Tombouctou. Through these novels, this article explores different ways in which insecurity is portrayed in African literature. These incude, among others, the issues of wars, terrorism, religious extremism and criminality which are predominant in Africa in the 21st century. This study therefore examines insecurity from the prism of threats to physical and emotional security, which result in a feeling of uncertainty, fear, resentment, vulnerability and danger. This study is premised on socio-critical and postcolonial approaches which study the text in relation to what obtains in the real society. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between insecurity and its diverse narratives and influence on the African francophone literature.  Methodologically, the study combines textual analysis with insights from security studies to shade more light on the theme of insecurity in these novels.
