Abstract

This study assessed the impact of 2011 post-election violence on the income of rural farmers in southern senatorial zone, Kaduna State. The specific objectives include describing the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents, examining the level of damage of farmers‟ assets and determining the impact of the post-election violence on the income of the farmers. A multi-stage sampling procedure was employed to select 300 farmers used for the study. Primary data were collected with the aid of a well structured interview schedule and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools. Findings indicate that 67% of the respondents were males; the majority (82%) were married with a mean household size of 7 persons. The majority (90%) had one form of formal education or the other. About 29% of the respondents lost their farming implements, while about 7% lost their loved ones to death as a result of the post-election violence. The mean annual income of the respondents in 2011(N290733.30) was lower than their mean annual income in 2014(N398266.70). The Chow-test analysis indicated an F-calculated value (4.15) which was statistically significant at 5% level of probability; meaning the post-election violence have negative impact on the income of the farmers. The study recommends that the affected communities should be assisted financially to overcome the adverse effects of post-election violence.
